River Severn - Key Stage 3 Humanities Project

During term one and two 2005 the students of KS3 undertook research of many aspects of the river, it’s estuary and The Bristol Channel.

Year Severn used ICT lessons to research the mammals that live in the region, using a British Wildlife Site to identify the pictures they were given and then comparing the map of the area with the mammal’s distribution map.

Year Eight researched the major settlements, natural and man made features of the area, including the Holm Islands. Year Eights chose pictures of each feature and gave it an appropriate sub-title.

Year Nine researched the designs of the two newest Severn Bridges and built models of them, using card, string and pre-cut wooden uprights. Year nine finished this part of the project by testing the bridges with model cars. Year nines also researched the local custom of elver eating, and several of them bravely tasted some elvers in a pint glass (Spaghetti really)

The project work culminated in the production of a 2 meter square map, cut in ceiling tiles and mounted in the school reception. The map was covered with the students research work and some information on other aspects covered in Geography, such as weather maps of the area and information on flooding.

The Map was painted by year nine, who also put on a production for a celebration assembly, in which small sketches were used to illustrate the History and Geography of the Severn River.
