   Hearts and Minds

Background

Hearts and Minds is a heritage project which aims to work with secondary schools to develop their understanding of heritage

The project is managed by Learning through Landscapes and delivered through partner organisations based in four regions: the South West (CSV Environment, Bristol), North East, Yorkshire and Humberside (Wildlife Trusts in Sheffield and Durham) and London (Learning through Landscapes).  Each region has a part-time project worker to develop the project in their region and to support schools on the programme.

One school will be selected each year to work on a school grounds based heritage project.  Each project will be unique to the school and can be carried out in any curriculum subject, but the project must be communicated throughout the whole school and its community, including celebrating the work that is produced during the year.

Schools will work with other organisations, such as museums, galleries and local history societies to bring a greater understanding of the potential that local heritage has in curriculum activity. There is also the potential for schools to work directly with artists and other professionals, to learn new skills and create expressions of young people’s ideas.

In 2005-2006 CSV Environment worked with Westhaven School in Uphill, North Somerset.  In this school Hearts and Minds focused on “Water Heritage” including the Severn Estuary, Somerset Levels and rivers.  The whole school was involved and the project was included in all curriculum areas.
