Tuesday

After our breakfast we boarded the coach to take us to the Somme, the First World War battlefields.  This was the first time we had been able to do this with Westhaven and it was a very moving experience.  We saw many cemeteries of the men who had died in battle and been buried where they had fallen.

Our first stop was at Thiepval, the memorial to the 73,000 men who had died with no known grave.  In the cemetery we looked at graves of many men, one of whom was as young as 16. The monument itself is vast and has the names of the battles and the men who had died in those battles engraved on it.

From there we went on to the Ulster monument and Beaumont Hamel. The latter is dedicated to the Canadians who fought in the war and the trenches are still all around the area. With the birds singing and the sun shining it was difficult to imagine the carnage that took place in those few months of 1916. We also went on to Vimy Ridge and saw the V shaped monument to those that had fallen at Vimy.

From there it was back to the youth hostel for our evening meal and a game of football.
