Term 4 2009A great start to term 4! It’s that girl again! Katy won a trophy for second place in the Under 14 girls event at Bristol even though she is still an under 13s competitor. Katy has also joined an athletics club out of school and won a medal for completing a 1500m fun run.

Meanwhile Simon completed another successful grading to be promoted to Orange belt ( 7 kyu) at Aikido.
Well done guys! – Any pupils wishing to display their sports achievements just have to let Mr. Barlow know.
North Somerset Special Schools Football Club A letter went out just before the end of term 3 about this fantastic new club which starts in Term 4 at the Campus on Wednesday evenings from 6.30 to 7.30. The club has FA coaches and is specifically catering for pupils from special schools. I am pleased to say that the best response from any school came from Westhaven. If you missed out on joining and are interested, contact Mr. Barlow at the school. All the reports from pupils so far have been very positive about the club so go on – give it a try!

Cycling in our “Choice” lessons. Cycle maintenance classes form part of the menu for KS3 “choice” lessons on Friday afternoons in Terms 3 & 4. The cycle maintenance classes are rounded off with two weeks of “BMX Gymkhana”. The pupils really enjoyed their first go at this new sport and are looking forward to improving their performances over term 4.
Table Tennis – Parents Evening – Wednesday1 April The school had the great good fortune once again to be visited by Ryan and Steven Jenkins. Ryan was a silver medallist at table Tennis at the last commonwealth games. The brothers helped out coaching in the Key Stage 3 PE lesson and then stayed on to meet, greet, coach and play table tennis with members of our school club and their parents after school.

Term 3 2009KS2 PE - Tag Rugby KS 2 have the privilege of being coached by not one but two RFU coaches in term 3 on Wednesdays. The pupils gave a really enthusiastic response to the initial sessions as did the staff. The good news does not end there! The school will also receive free balls, tags and bibs from the RFU – what a result!
The pupils took part in a tournament in the last week of term. Hopefully we will get results and photos from the organisers soon.
KS2 Football KS2 also have a coach from the FA to help with football on Tuesdays. (They’re doing well aren’t they!)
Jo the FA coach. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Somerset FA for the coaching AND the bag of age appropriate (size 3) footballs they gave us free of charge!

KS3 Football tournament at Taunton Weds 28 January
The massive sports hall at Wellsprings.
With their silver medals!
With their “leader” for the day.
What a performance! After a narrow 2-1 defeat in the first game, Westhaven came roaring back to an unbeaten four game run which also saw them keep four clean sheets (like Man Utd.) They drew 2 and won 2 to come second overall in the league. Well done to the whole squad.

KS4 Football tournament at Taunton Weds 11 February KS4 pupils emulated their younger schoolmates by also finishing second in their football tournament. A great day started with special coaching sessions from high level FA football coaches. A special thank you to Luke from Fairmead who joined us through a specially set up “February Transfer Window”. Special mention to Simon who played particularly well and scored lots of goals!
The calm before the storm.
Special tactics before the tournament.
Teachers join in the fun.
Top scorer Simon on the move.
Exhausted and elated at the same time…but which emotion is most evident? |

Term 2 2008Clubs. Sadly no football club this term. We are hoping to have coaches back for term 5 or 6. Table Tennis as usual on Tuesdays & Wednesdays. Trips
Monday 24 November. Year 9 Swimming gala at Bath Leisure Centre. A fantastic effort by all the pupils led to a number of Gold and Bronze medals being won at this event. Hayley Buxton won 2 gold medals and Georgie Griffiths won 2 gold and one bronze medal in the individual events. The girls were also in the relay where they won bronze. Special mention to Ben Foster who showed great courage in his race. All pupils also won participation medals
Wednesday 3 December KS4 Basketball Tournament at Strode College. Another fantastic sporting performance by Westhaven pupils saw us come joint top of the table with two wins and a draw from 3 matches. The morning session was a general training circuit of basketball skills run by the BtEC students of the college who, we must say, did an excellent job of coaching people not much younger than themselves. After pupils had had a chance to hone their skills it was time for lunch before the three match round robin was to take place. The first match was a draw 6-6 with Fairmead. In the next two games we beat Fosse Mead and Avalon convincingly. Fairmead actually won the league with a slightly better goal difference but Westhaven were justifiably proud of their performances on the day. Well done to all.

Our Current Westhaven Table Tennis Club 'Number One' ranked player now plays for a local league team.

Friday 5 December – Target Games Festival at Hutton Moor for Year 8. Almost everyone in year 8 took part in this event with a guest team mate – Josh from EOTAS. All pupils had a go at four different events: New Age Kurling, Boccia, Bowling and Mini Golf (with a bit of “Frisbee Golf” thrown in for good measure) There were for other schools present but at the end of the day Westhaven pupils had scored more points than any other school and were thus winners of the first ever Target Games trophy. ![]()
Table Tennis Champions 2008. Champions this year were Tyntesfield with Barrington in second and Montacute in third. Rather than play matches pupils scored points in challenges such as Table Tennis Skittles or Table Tennis Golf. Top scorer in the skittles was Dean with 11 out of 15 skittles knocked down. Top at Golf was Hayley with 5 out of 5. Both pupils are in Tyntesfield house.

STOP PRESS! Sportsmark and Activemark kitemarks The school received notification in the last week of term 2 that we have achieved the prestigious kitemarks for the provision of high quality sport and PE across the whole school. We were the only school in North Somerset this year to get both awards. We could not have done this without the support of the parents who have been willing to support the provision of the new after school sports clubs by picking up their children from school after training sessions. Thanks and well done to all.

Trips There was only one trip this term but it was a good one! Our bi-annual trek across the last 10 miles of the North Mendip Walk. All pupils from KS4 took part. We were blessed with good weather for most of the day but unfortunately it did rain heavily right at the end of the walk. Still, everyone made it and had a great time too. This was no small feat in itself as the terrain was sometimes pretty challenging with some steep ascents and descents. Almost every pupil managed to get muddy in a way that attending staff couldn’t. Now how did that happen…..
Cresting the first peak, still looking fresh.

Sitting on giant hay bales to have lunch.
We are all still here but look at the gathering clouds!

March 200819 March 2008. Cross Country at Kingsdon Manor.
A whopping great squad of 23 runners attended this event on a lovely sunny Wednesday in the beautiful setting of Kingsdon in the heart of Panton Ridge near Yeovil. The pictures below tell much of the story, the tough course punished all the runners but as always the boys and girls from Westhaven did the school proud. Highlights of the day were Jack Pearce from year 7 coming second in the junior boys individual event, and the senior boys team coming first in their team event

Don’t forget the new football club for KS2 and year 7&8s in term 5! Happy Easter.

February 2008The Westhaven Table Tennis Club started on the 26 February. The club has an amazing total of 28 members who turn up on Tuesday or Wednesday after school (or both!). Members of staff have been seen playing table tennis “after hours” too – most notably Mr Midgeley, Mrs Dockerty and Miss Hunt. We have a fantastic local coach too, Mike Withyman who is an ETTA Level 2 qualified coach.
|
|
We have advised pupils that if they do take up the sport in the long term, they should purchase their own bats but to please consult Mike Withyman for advice before they do. Below is a picture of the hall on the first night of the club.

September/OctoberThe school welcomes our two new PE coaches, Mr Spencer and Mr Barnard. Mr Barnard will be working on Tuesday KS4 lessons and Mr Spencer will be working on Wednesdays and Thursdays for KS 3 PE and KS2 & 3 Swimming.
A big thanks to the staff of the PRU who allowed us to “develop” their small hard-court area for use as an outdoor basketball area.
|
A big thank you to the pupils from Year 10 who did the heavy lifting work putting two more hoops on the court area.
|
Year 7 pupils went to a TAG rugby festival at North Bristol Rugby Club on Wednesday 3d October.
In the morning sessions the pupils were split up and trained with pupils from other schools under the guidance of specialist rugby coaches. After lunch the Westhaven team played matches against two other school teams. Our pupils did really well. |
