News:Football at Yeovil - The Finale!
Another great day and great team effort from both teams. Thanks to Rachael from Somerset FA for organising this brilliant tournament for our teams. Kitchen Science
Mark Nelson came in to work with students and parents to show what simple experiments can be done with everyday kitchen ingredients. A great day was had by all! Phase Two visit @Bristol
Phase Two students enjoyed an interesting day at @Bristol, attending two workshops about the forces involved in flight, then designing, making and then testing their own flyers.
A big thank you to those involved in Phase 3 that arranged the trip. Graffiti Day at Westhaven Graffiti day project concluded with a day at Westhaven creating two beautiful works between year 8 students and the majority of year 9 students.
Some students had visited Worle school and had taken part in a workshop previously on techniques of street art and they helped teach the others. The staff also couldn’t help but pick up a paint pen and get involved!
A big thanks to Mrs Dockerty for running the sessions and to Scott Walker the artist who worked with us. Art Workshop for Year 11 As year 11 embarked on their exam work last term they were fortunate enough to be able to take part in a painting workshop with local artist Cathy Hicks. Cathy’s work is based on landscapes but she works in an abstract and experimental way which lends her paint effects to all sorts of uses. During the afternoon workshop Cathy taught them how to manipulate paint and use household things such as plaster, salt, cling film and detergent to create unique effects. A big thank you to Cathy Hicks for volunteering her time, expertise and resources.
Stem Challenge
On the 7th February Phase 2 students took part in an Engineering Team Challenge Day where they worked together to design, build and test a working wind turbine. They worked fantastically together and produced an excellent working model. Visit to the Curzon Cinema
Making pinhole cameras A TRUE CINEMATIC! On Thursday the 23rd February 2012, Phase 1 & 2 went to the Curzon Community Cinema in Clevedon for a second visit, this time to look at the history of the cinema and of films in general, specifically silent films. This was not the second time I had been to the cinema, as I had been some 30 times previous to either trip. At about nine o’clock in the morning, everyone gathered their coats and headed for the hall, with the exception of P1G, who arrived five minutes later, and boarded the bus to the cinema. About half and hour later, we arrived at the cinema, got out, received our tickets by Ms Towler, and gave the said tickets back to Angel and Joseph of P1G. We then sat down and listened to the history of film and the cinema. After watching a silent film of the 1900s and some 4 second films from some other schools and our school, we split into five class sized groups. The group that I was with, 9M, stayed in the cinema house to learn about, make and then use pinhole cameras. Once our “lesson” had ended, we went down to the foyer to learn even more about the history of film and the cinema. Once this was done, my group went to outside the Oak Room, where we did some drawing and then finally to the mini-cinema near the top of the cinema where we watched a Tom and Jerry cartoon. After this, we headed for the cinema house where we watched a Tom and Jerry cartoon. After this, we headed back to the bus. On Tuesday 24 January, Mr Fisher, a school governor came into school to talk to Phase one about Chinese New Year. It was extremely informative with plenty of interesting resources to look at.
Table Tennis Trip to National Sports Centre, Cardiff
Westhaven Table Tennis Team enjoyed a trip to Cardiff to play against their Welsh peers. The students paired up with their opponents to play mixed doubles. A big thank you to Welsh National Coach and Number 1 player Ryan Jenkins for sorting out the venue.
P1R Trip to the Life skills Centre Phase 1R enjoyed a trip to the Life Skills Centre in Bristol, learning from the "mock-up" scenarios and life like exhibits.
Hopefully all pupils learnt lifelong lessons about safety in the home and elsewhere out of school. The class were really well behaved throughout the trip. Well done P1R!
